As a condition of the bailout of US auto makers, the US government is requiring that the pay of auto workers at GM, Ford, and Chrysler be reduced to the levels at the US divisions of Toyota, Nissan, and Honda. The Unions are opposed to this measure. I know the solution to this problem, but nobody else seems to be mentioning it; the big 3 executives stated publicly, at one point, when begging for assistance, that they would each work for $1 a year. If we hold them to that promise, and take the millions of dollars that they would each be giving up and redistribute it evenly amongst the workers, this would compensate for any reductions in salaries. Problem solved. But I doubt that such a thing will actually be considered by the rich, powerful, greedy, and conveniently forgetful CEOs.
